USS San Diego Memorial Plaque unveiled in Times Square

By Chris Isleib
Director of Public Affairs, United States World War One Centennial Commission

The U.S World War I Centennial Commission unveiled a new memorial plaque honoring the crew of the U.S. Navy WWI heavy cruiser USS San Diego during Fleet Week New York 2019, which this year is commemorating World War I, Thursday, May 23, 2019, in New York's Times Square. The new memorial, which will be permanently placed in Ocean Beach, N.Y. later this summer, honors the USS San Diego, which was sunk by enemy action off the coast of New York's Fire Island over a hundred years ago, and the six U.S. Navy sailors who were lost in the tragedy.
