WASHINGTON, DC -- New senior advisors for the U.S. World War 1 Centennial Commission were announced this week, in a media event at the National Press Club. These advisors included both Special Advisors and Diplomatic Advisors.
The announcement was introduced by the Commission's first Special Advisor, former Cabinet Secretary General Barry McCaffrey, who set the war in historical context. "There may never have been a more tragic, devastating conflict in the history of mankind, which was unnecessary, and with such huge consequences that they continue to this day".

The inaugural public meeting of the World War One Centennial Commission Upper Midwest Region was held on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, the founding sponsor of the WWICC. WEDNESDAY SEPT. 16, 2015 | 11 A.M. - 3 P.M. PMML LECTURE HALL *The meeting is free and open to the public. The ticket price covers the cost of a boxed lunch for this meeting. At this gathering of dedicated state partners and volunteers, the Commission will provide an overview of the staff support options for state representatives, along with a status of the WWI Design competition and updates from the Commission’s leadership. The Upper Midwest Region consists of the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. The design team of the national World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C. talked about the ideas and symbolism behind the winning entry. The memorial commemorates the centennial of World War I and the nearly five million Americans who served. Joe Weishaar, a 25-year-old architect-in-training, was named a finalist in an international competition to design the memorial. To fully realize his vision, he invited veteran classical sculptor Sabin Howard to join him. Their partnership produced the winning entry, called “The Weight of Sacrifice.”

WW1CC Chair Robert Dalessandro, was asked to speak at the Pentagon for the Office of the Assistance Secretary of Defense for Manpower & Reserve Affairs (OASD M&RA) Brown Bag Series. His presentation was on World War I, it's impact, the Commission, and the new national-level World War I Memorial at Pershing Park. It was a great event, with enthusiastic audience. As part of the presentation, WW1CC partner Stephany Neal also talked about the 369th Experience, which is a historical/cultural project that pays tribute to the famous Harlem Hellfighters Regimental Jazz Band.
