FAQs
Frequently asked questions about the program:
What are the benefits of participation?
Participation in the program allows you to raise awareness about WW1 and raise money for your organization:
Educate: We have found that the poppy seeds are a great conversation starters, opening up the subject and awareness of WW1, the centennial, the significance and impact of that forgotten war and the remembrance of the veterans whose effort and sacrifice shaped the very foundation of our American culture.
Stimulate: Getting your organization and constituency involved in the WW1 Poppy Program for your fund raising is an effective and pro-active way to stimulate your organization's participation in the centennial. Many paths for involvement lead from this.
Raise money: Although you will be raising money for your own organization, by getting the WW1 Poppy Kits from us for a donation, you are helping to raise money for the National WW1 Memorials at Pershing Park in Washington DC. With your participation in this one program you are helping two causes.
Honor Veterans: Each seed packet honors the legacy of the 4.7 million American veterans that served during World War I and the 116,516 Americans who never made it home.
Beautify your neighborhood: And don't forget that these are really pretty!
Why is the red poppy is an internationally recognized symbol of remembrance for veteran sacrifice?
It all started during WW1.
These the vibrant red flowers, improbably growing in the cracks of a war-torn battlefield, caught the eye of a soldier named John McCrae inspiring the world's most famous War Memorial Poem – “In Flanders Field”.
How much should you charge when you are fund raising with the poppy seed packs?
Seed packet prices in garden stores and retail shops vary widely. $2 per packet is a very reasonable "ask".
And you could ask more. Ultimately it is up to you.
Remember:
- The flowers are really pretty;
- The remembrance they bring is honorable;
- The sacrifice they stand for is important;
- The war we are commemorating is the crucible that forged the America we know today.
